Nourishing your skin takes more than just adopting a skincare routine. It takes work and dedication in other areas of your life. A skin care routine only works if paired with daily healthy habits. Here are five habits that you should adopt to achieve that glowing and smooth complexion.
Maintain a Healthy Diet
You may be tired of hearing it by now, but it’s probably one of, if not the most important habit to adopt, to maintain healthy skin and that is eating a healthy diet. Every food you consume will, one way or another, show itself through your skin. Whether that be pimples, redness. or smooth, clear skin. Try to adopt a diet low in sugar and eat an abundance of healthy fat, protein, and vegetables.
Wash Your Face Every Night
Avoid makeup wipes. Wash your face with mild soap and water. Ensuring that you rinse well. Makeup wipes are harsh on the skin and do not adequately cleanse the face. If you do not effectively rid your face of makeup, dirt, and dead skin cell build up other products you use will essentially be useless. Those products will just lay over the old makeup, dirt, and dead skin cells and not penetrate properly. Plus, the longer dirt and makeup sits on the skin, the more likely you will experience unwanted breakouts.
Exfoliating helps get deep into the skin and clear clogged pores which allow the product to properly penetrate the skin. Exfoliating also helps remove dead skin cells that build up each day, that make the skin look dull and feel dry. Depending on your skin type, you should exfoliate about two to three times a week. If you have sensitive skin do it one to two times a week. Don’t go too crazy, over-exfoliating can strip the skin of its natural oils leading to breakouts, irritation, and wrinkles.
Always Apply Sunscreen
Sunscreen is a very critical habit you should be adopting every single day. This is because prolonged exposure to UV rays can make you look older as well as increase your risk of developing cancer. Unprotected exposure to the sun can cause premature aging signs such as wrinkling, under eye bags, and dark spots. According to the World Health Organization, up to 90% of the visible changes attributed to aging may be caused by sun exposure.
Get a Full Night’s Sleep
Getting a full night’s sleep of about seven to eight hours a night has many benefits. From reducing your risk of developing health conditions to improving your memory and immune system to keeping your skin clear and glowing. This is because sleep deprivation decreases blood flow and increases cortisol, a stress hormone. Cortisol causes a sallow complexion and promotes inflammation.
Adopting these habits in your daily life will ensure that your skin stays nourished and healthy for years to come. The earlier you adopt these habits the better, as it will keep you looking young as you age.
