Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, you CAN stay on track with your fitness routine. With a few minor tweaks, you can still accomplish your workout goals. We are creatures of habit, so when we leave the comfort of our homes and our routines, we often throw our hands up and decide that we can’t possibly keep up our routine. However, treating time away from home as “cheat days” is the first mistake many of us make when traveling. The first step to staying on track is to want to stay active and healthy. You may not have the comfort of your local gym, the food you are used to eating, the bed you are used to turning into, or that neighborhood running loop, but you still have access to fitness. Once you change your perspective, you will be on your way to maintaining your healthy lifestyle on the go.
Here are some great ways to see your surroundings in a new way when traveling that can help you stay on track with your at-home fitness routines:
Actively Experience Your Environment Plan your trip to include an activity every day that will allow you to get a little exercise in. For instance, many large cities have bike rentals or share programs, so see the city by bike rather than by taxi. Take the stairs instead of the elevator to those observation decks, or to that conference room on the fifth floor. You’ll be surprised how much exercise you can get in each day!
Create Your Own Walking Tour If you are planning on sightseeing, map out your destinations and plan a walking tour that stops at each spot along the way. This is going to be WAY more beneficial than that bar crawl...but if you must, do that on foot, too! Start Your Day With a Workout
Dedicate some time each morning when traveling to do a five-minute workout before you get your day rolling. There are plenty of high-intensity workouts that don’t require equipment, such as squats, push-ups, or jumping jacks. This is a great way to burn some calories and get you energized for that walking tour!
Work the Line If you are feeling touristy, you will most likely end up in a line waiting with all the other tourists. Use this time wisely by doing some subtle exercises like calf raises, belly breathing, or glute squeezes. Note to self: Subtle is best in a line of people.
